THE SIPE STORY / EST. 1975
It started with
boat numbers.
It kept growing.
A homemade cutting die. A garage in Woodburn, Indiana. An idea that became a company built around helping people make things well.
1975
A practical beginning.
Keith Sipe needed registration numbers for his boat. He set steel knives into wooden boards to make the cutting dies himself, founding Sipe Steel Rule Die in Woodburn, Indiana. A personal garage project grew into making steel rule dies for local printers. As demand grew, the business moved to Front Street.
1986
From making dies to making the cut.
George Schrumpf, a salesman for a local wire die manufacturer, purchased the business from Keith. He added die cutting equipment and services, expanding what Sipe could do for its customers.
1997–2004
More room. More possibilities.
A new 10,000-square-foot facility opened on Roemer Drive in Woodburn Industrial Park in 1997. The first full-size die cutting press arrived in 2000, handling sheets up to 28 × 40 inches. A second followed in 2003, then a full-size foil stamping press in 2004.
Steve Hatlem joined George as a business partner in 2001. His manufacturing experience brought process improvements, new capabilities and a second shift. The company began doing business simply as Sipe, reflecting an offering that had grown beyond dies.
2006
Closer to our customers.
Sipe moved from its Woodburn facility to 19,000 square feet in Fort Wayne's Centennial Industrial Park, making room to grow and bringing the business closer to its customers.
2014
The finishing touch takes shape.
The first digital 3D UV machine introduced dimensional spot coatings. Alongside die cutting, foil stamping, embossing and laminating, these high-end finishes brought another layer of possibility. Sipe also expanded into consumer packaging.
2022–TODAY
A new chapter. The same ingenuity.
Andy Hord became Sipe's fourth owner in 2022. His label printing experience and sales and marketing background supported growth in consumer packaging, bringing printing and production together under one roof.
Today, Sipe combines flexographic printing, digital and flexographic labels, folding cartons, flexible packaging and promotional products with foil stamping, embossing, laminating, folding and gluing, 3D spot UV, steel rule dies and die cutting.
The equipment has changed.
